Fog Dorks Dominate VHF! (Area 7 Only)
Fellow frequency fiends, Alex (K7ALO) and Britt (K7BDB) survived the 2025 ARRL September VHF Contest, despite operating “In the fucking fog and rain no less!”—with Alex admitting, “I didn’t know where I was aiming half the time haha”.
The good news? We are champions! When checking the Area 7 scores, our station (WD0RKS) was Rank 1 in the Unlimited Multioperator category with a score of 1,078. Alex was thrilled: “Lol! We won!” and “first (only) place in our cat for 7 area. Looks better than 12th”.
The less-good news? While checking the scores for All W/VE (US/Canada), we dropped to a respectable, if anticlimactic, 12th place overall.
And let’s not forget Dave (W4DVE), who spent the entire weekend fighting the impossible fight on the microwave bands. While we wrestled with damp wire, Dave was having an epic, one-sided argument with his little hand-held radios, desperate to score points on the elusive 900MHz and 1.2GHz bands. He looked like he was trying to summon an alien race using only a coat pocket full of plastic gadgets, constantly yelling “CQ! CQ! Who has the tiny signals?!” We’re pretty sure his total microwave score was one very confused contact with a guy testing his automated sprinkler system.
Still, we braved the elements and put a score on the board. We are the champions of not letting miserable weather stop us from playing radio!
73, and always aim slightly uphill!
